Here’s the stuff that just didn’t do it for me this year. With one or two exceptions, I don’t listen to these artists expecting their music to be bad… I’ve heard at least a little something I enjoyed from everyone on this list in the past. Some of them just got lazy this year, while others seem aggressively committed to being the most obnoxiously lowest-common-denominator version of themselves that they can be. Neither of those things will land you on the good side of my year-end list-making bonanza. Having said that, I’ve made a good faith effort to embed a song I kinda liked from each of these albums, just to show that these records aren’t all bad.
Here are my first impressions of the latest releases from Sia, Dream Theater, The Honey Trees, Animal Collective, and Plumb.
The first order of business as 2015 comes to a close is to sift through all of my favorite songs that I first heard this year (or perhaps late last year, and it just took me a little longer to appreciate them) and attempt to put them in order, which as usual starts to get a bit silly below the top 30 or so. Music videos and some live performances are embedded for that first chunk of the list. As I’ve done in previous years, I’ve also got a Spotify playlist that covers a lot of these, limited to a song per artist and more in chronological order of when I discovered them.
The start of a new year means a lot of catching up on stuff folks recommended to me last year that I didn’t quite get around to in time. But there are actually a couple brand new releases in here somewhere. January turned out to be a better month for new music than I expected!
Here are my first impressions of the latest releases from Andrew Peterson, Brooke Fraser, Martel, Matisyahu, Young Oceans, Joe Henry, Foo Fighters, Belle & Sebastian, Sleater-Kinney, Sia, and The Lone Bellow.
